BRIDGE Housing Celebrates Grand Opening of Marea Alta, Groundbreaking of San Leandro Senior Apartments

SAN LEANDRO, CA, May 17, 2017—Alameda County and San Leandro officials today will participate in a dual celebration: the grand opening of Marea Alta, 115 affordable family apartments, and the adjacent groundbreaking of 85 affordable apartments for seniors with low incomes. The event is part of East Bay Housing Organizations’ Affordable Housing Week.

The two-phase development by nonprofit BRIDGE Housing is located on a former BART parking lot across from the San Leandro BART Station. The newly completed first phase includes Marea Alta, a child care center to be operated by Davis Street Family Resource Center and more than 240 below-grade parking spaces for BART patrons. Marea Alta rents are set to be affordable to households earning 30-60% of Area Median Income ($31,290 to $57,365 for a family of four).

Marea Alta was the first BRIDGE development to use modular construction, and it will be deployed again for the second phase of the master-planned site: San Leandro Senior Apartments, which will serve households earning up to 30%-50% of Area Median Income (up to $41,750 for a household of two). BRIDGE will partner with Episcopal Senior Communities to provide services to the residents. San Leandro Senior Apartments is estimated to be complete in early 2018.

“It is incredibly exciting to reach these milestones,” said Cynthia Parker, President and CEO of BRIDGE Housing. “At a time when the housing shortage is impacting people and cities across the region, we and our partners are proud to deliver affordable homes with transit connections, proximity to jobs and community-serving space that will benefit residents and neighbors alike.”

Financial partners for both developments include the California Department of Housing and Community Development, the City of San Leandro and the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco. Additional funding for Marea Alta was provided by Wells Fargo, N.A. Additional funding for San Leandro Senior Apartments is being provided by the Housing Authority of the County of Alameda, Alameda County Community Development Agency and US Bank.

For both phases, the architect is Ankrom Moisan Architects and the general contractor is Cannon Constructors North. The public partner and land owner is the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART).

The event, which is sponsored by Wells Fargo and US Bank, will feature the following speakers: Amit Price Patel, Board Member, East Bay Housing Organizations; Wilma Chan, Supervisor, Alameda County, District 3; Deborah Cox, Councilmember District 1, City of San Leandro; Rebecca Saltzman, Director, BART, District 3; Robert Raburn, Director, BART, District 4; Ben Metcalf, Director, California Department of Housing and Community Development; Chris Gouig, Director, Housing Authority of Alameda County; John Kauh, Wells Fargo Bank; Michelle Brega, US Bank; and Ann Silverberg and Jamie Hiteshew, BRIDGE Housing Corporation.
