Kids in SF’s Potrero Hill Gear up for School at the Unite Potrero Backpack Giveaway and Resource Fair

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, August 12, 2017---More than 200 students who live in the city’s Potrero Hill neighborhood received free backpacks, essential school supplies, books and back-to-school information at a special giveaway with the theme "Connect for School Success."

With more than 400 attendees, the event provided students and their families with resources for a successful start to the 2017-18 academic year, including backpacks filled with spiral notebooks, pencils, crayons and other supplies, along with information on preschool and afterschool programs enrollment, as well as college financial aid resources. There was also free haircuts for young boys and hairstyling for young girls, plus a climbing wall, music, dance, & snacks.

To acknowledge such a needed and successful event, Assemblymember David Chiu’s office presented the Potrero planning committee with a Certificate of Recognition.

The resource fair is a component of Rebuild Potrero (www.rebuildpotrero.com), nonprofit BRIDGE Housing’s comprehensive transformation effort to rebuild 619 units of distressed public housing and create another 1,000 new homes for a mix of income levels plus community facilities, open space, and social networks and services to improve the lives of current and future generations. In addition, Rebuild Potrero is a part of HOPE SF (www.hope-sf.org), an anti-poverty and housing development initiative which seeks to transform San Francisco’s most dilapidated public housing into thriving mixed-income communities through holistic revitalization. HOPE SF is a partnership between the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development and the San Francisco Housing Authority.
