Celadon at 9th & Broadway Named Finalist in 2016 ULI Global Awards for Excellence

SAN DIEGO, CA, May 18, 2016---Celadon at 9th & Broadway, an affordable development by nonprofit BRIDGE Housing, is a finalist in the 2016 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Global Awards for Excellence, widely recognized as one of the land use industry’s most prestigious award programs.

Located in a redeveloping urban area of San Diego on a former parking lot, Celadon at 9th & Broadway’s 250 affordable rental apartments embrace a multigenerational population with services and ground-floor retail. Twenty-five of the apartments are reserved for youth aging out of foster care and adults under the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) program and 63 apartments serve frail seniors under the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).

Celadon is a model of sustainable design in an urban setting, incorporating such features as an eco-roof garden with drought tolerant planting, sustainable landscaping and open spaces, a solar photovoltaic system built as a vertical façade on the south side of the 17-story building, and a solar hot water system above the roof. Celadon received a LEED Gold Certification

“Celadon at 9th & Broadway is a pivotal project for the healthy growth of downtown San Diego,” said Cynthia A. Parker, President and CEO of BRIDGE Housing. “It satisfies the goals of a cohesive urban community by offering housing to seniors, the adult workforce and at-risk youth transitioning to adulthood—all in an otherwise costly market that is becoming saturated with high-end developments.”

The architects for Celadon were SVA Architects and Studio E Architects; the general contractor was Turner Construction.

This year’s 26 finalists—two in Asia, six in Europe and 18 in North America—will advance to the final stage of the award, with a group of winners to be announced in October at the ULI Fall Meeting in Dallas. The winning projects will be selected by an international jury made up of ULI members representing a multidisciplinary collection of real estate development expertise, including finance, land planning, development, public affairs, design and other professional services.

“One of our annual highlights is to recognize, through the Global Awards for Excellence initiative, some of the truly wonderful development projects that have been created in our communities,” said Jury Chair Steve Navarro, Executive Vice President, CBRE l The Furman Co. “The finalists this year were all a joy to explore. Large and small, each represents best in class. When a unique and successful project transcends boundaries yet fits perfectly into its immediate community, it exemplifies what we all strive for and should be celebrated.”
